Jul 29, 2010 | by MattE | No CommentsRyan Couture, son of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, has signed with Strikeforce and will make his professional debut on Aug. 13 at the Strikeforce Challengers show in Phoenix.
The promotion announced the signing Thursday, saying the 27-year-old lightweight had signed a multi-fight deal. Couture’s first opponent will be Lucas Stark, who fights out of the Phoenix suburb of Chandler, Ariz.
Couture has a 5-1-1 record as a lightweight amateur and all five of his wins are by submission. He trains with his father’s Xtreme Couture team in Las Vegas.
Couture’s background, like his father, is in wrestling. He wrestled in high school before going to college at Western Washington University. He started his MMA training in 2006 and in 2008, he moved to Las Vegas to train with his father.
Couture’s last amateur fight came in Las Vegas on a Tuff-N-Uff show. He fought to a draw with Sean Bollinger.
The Strikeforce Challengers show in Phoenix will have its main card aired live on Showtime starting at 10 p.m. Central on Aug. 13. The main event features Chicagoan Louis Taylor against Joe Riggs at a 182-pound catch weight. The event also features Strikeforce’s first women’s tournament, a 4-woman 135-pound tourney to determine the No. 2 challenger for Sara Kaufman’s title.
